Lost your wallet? Here's exactly what to do (with and without a tracker).
Losing a wallet is one of the most stressful modern nightmares — credit cards, ID, cash, and the 10 loyalty cards you'll spend weeks replacing. The good news: if you have a bluetooth tracker like Tukio, there's a clear playbook for recovery that works 9 times out of 10.
Step 1: Ring the Tracker From Your Phone
If your wallet is within roughly 100-400 feet (30-120 meters) of you, your tracker can ring audibly so you can follow the sound. Open the Find My app (iPhone) or the Tukio app (Android), tap your wallet's tracker, and hit Play Sound.
Tukio's 95dB alarm pierces through couch cushions, jacket pockets, and even thin walls. Most people find their lost wallet within 2 minutes of using this feature.
Step 2: Check the Last Known Location on the Map
If you can't hear the alarm, the wallet is out of bluetooth range. But don't panic. Your tracker's last known location is pinned on the map — this is usually where you had your wallet last before losing signal (e.g., the coffee shop, your car, the gym locker room).
Drive or walk to that location first. On iPhone, Apple's Find My network will update the location the moment anyone with an iPhone walks past your wallet — often within minutes in a populated area.
Step 3: Use Precision Finding (iPhone Only)
Once you're near the last known location, Apple's Precision Finding feature points you to the exact spot your tracker is — accurate to within a few centimeters when within 30 feet.
Step 4: Enable Lost Mode
If you still can't find it, enable Lost Mode in the Find My or Tukio app. This notifies you instantly the next time the tracker is detected by any device in the Find My network (iPhone users) or any phone with the Tukio app running nearby (Android).
You can also leave a phone number so a good samaritan who finds your wallet can contact you — Apple's Lost Mode displays this safely when the tracker is scanned with an iPhone.
Step 5: The Worst-Case Backup Plan
If your wallet stays lost for more than 24 hours, take these steps in parallel:
- Freeze your credit and debit cards through your bank apps (takes 30 seconds per card)
- File a police report — required for most insurance claims and for replacing certain IDs
- Start the process of replacing your driver's license, health insurance card, etc.
If you have Tukio Premium Protection, you're also covered for up to $100 in lost item reimbursement — submit your claim through your Tukio dashboard.
Pro tip: Never lose it in the first place
The best recovery is the one you never need. Slip a Tukio into your wallet today, and use the Separation Alerts feature (available on iPhone) — your phone will ping you the moment you walk more than 50 feet from your wallet. Most people stop losing things entirely within a week of using this.
